Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life’s most precious moments, and capturing those early days with a newborn photoshoot is a beautiful way to create lifelong memories. At Wild Ones Photography, I want to make the experience as smooth, stress-free, and enjoyable as possible for you and your little one.
Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your session, ensuring we capture beautiful, timeless photos of your baby in a relaxed and safe environment.
1. Choosing the Right Outfit for Baby and Family
My studio is kept warm and cozy to ensure your baby stays comfortable during the shoot. Because of this, I recommend dressing in layers so you can remove them if needed.
For Baby:
Dress them in loose, easy-to-remove layers so we don’t disturb their sleep.
Avoid tight socks or anything that could leave marks on their delicate skin.
I’ll be wrapping baby in soft, neutral fabrics, so no need to bring elaborate outfits unless you have something special in mind.
For Parents & Siblings:
Choose neutral, solid colors for a timeless and cohesive look.
Avoid busy patterns, bright colors, and logos as they can be distracting.
Soft, natural tones like beige, white, grey, and pastels photograph beautifully.
2. Preparing Baby for a Sleepy, Relaxed Session
A sleepy baby makes for a smooth session. My goal is to capture those curled-up, peaceful poses, and a well-rested baby helps us achieve this.
Try to keep your baby awake for a little while before the session to encourage a deep sleep during the shoot.
If keeping them awake isn’t possible, don’t worry—a short nap before arriving won’t hurt!
3. Feeding & Settling Baby Before the Shoot
To help keep baby content and relaxed during the session:
Feed your baby just before arriving or give them a top-up once you get to the studio. A full tummy will help them stay sleepy and settled.
If you use a dummy, bring it along—it can help soothe baby between poses.
I allow plenty of time for feeding breaks, so don’t worry if baby needs a little extra comfort during the session.
4. What to Bring to Your Newborn Photoshoot
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable session, consider packing the following:
Milk/formula (if bottle-fed) for top-ups.
Nappies & wipes—accidents happen, and that’s totally okay!
A dummy (if used) for comfort.
A cozy blanket for wrapping baby in between shots.
5. What to Expect During the Photoshoot
Newborn sessions typically last up to two hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and capturing those adorable sleepy poses.
Baby will be wrapped or posed gently on a soft posing table with carefully selected props.
Safety is my top priority—I’ll guide you through the process, and at times, I may ask for a helping hand to ensure baby is fully supported.
If your baby is extra sleepy and cooperative, we may finish sooner—but there’s never any rush!
