What If My Baby Won't Settle? A Guide to Newborn Sessions

One of the most common concerns I hear from parents before their newborn session is:

"What if my baby won't settle?"

Firstly, please know that if this is something you're worrying about, you're not alone.

As a mum of three and a newborn photographer, I completely understand. Those early weeks can be exhausting. Babies are adjusting to life outside the womb, parents are running on very little sleep, and every day can feel different.

The good news? Babies cry. Babies need feeding. Babies need changing. Babies need cuddles.

And that's completely normal.

Newborn Sessions Are Designed Around Your Baby

My newborn sessions are intentionally longer than a standard photoshoot because they are completely baby-led.

There is no rush.

The session allows plenty of time for feeding breaks, nappy changes, cuddles, and comforting your little one whenever they need it.

I would much rather spend time helping baby settle than have parents feeling stressed or pressured to "perform" for the camera.

How Do I Settle Baby?

During your session, I will do everything I can to help your baby feel calm and comfortable.

Sometimes this means gentle soothing, swaddling, rocking, or simply giving baby time to adjust.

Other times, babies simply want Mum or Dad. If that's the case, I'll happily step back and let you comfort them before we continue.

Interestingly, babies will often settle for me when they won't settle for their parents. This isn't because I'm magical! It's simply because babies can pick up on the emotions around them. Parents are often tired, anxious, or worried that the session isn't going to plan, whereas I arrive calm, relaxed, and focused entirely on your baby.

Of course, every baby is different, and what works for one baby may not work for another.

What If My Baby Stays Awake?

An awake baby doesn't automatically mean an unsettled baby.

If your little one is calm and content, I will absolutely continue with the session.

In fact, some of my favourite images have been of babies wide awake, gazing curiously at the camera and taking in the world around them.

Whilst I do love those sleepy, curled-up poses you often see online, they aren't the only beautiful photographs I can create.

What If My Baby Really Won't Settle?

Very occasionally, despite everyone's best efforts, a baby simply isn't having their day.

Perhaps they have a sore tummy.

Maybe they're going through a growth spurt or sleep regression.

Perhaps they're feeling extra clingy and only want Mum.

Or maybe they're simply far too interested in what I'm doing to even think about sleeping!

Whilst this is rare, it does happen.

If I genuinely feel that we aren't able to achieve the best possible images for you, I may suggest returning on another day and trying again.

There is no additional charge for this.

Why?

Because I want you to have the best possible photographs of your baby.

Your newborn days only happen once, and if we need a second attempt to capture them properly, then that's exactly what we'll do.

Please Don't Worry

One thing I always tell parents is this:

Your baby will not be the first baby I've photographed who needed extra cuddles, extra feeds, or extra time.

And they certainly won't be the last.

I have photographed babies who slept beautifully, babies who stayed awake for hours, babies who needed constant cuddles, and babies who wanted to know exactly what was going on around them.

Every single one of them was perfect in their own way.

So please don't let worries about your baby settling stop you from booking a newborn session.

You don't need a "perfect" baby.

You don't need a baby who sleeps all day.

You simply need your baby.

The rest, we'll figure out together.

If you're expecting a little one and would like to know more about newborn sessions, I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to get in touch and ask any questions you may have.
